“Spoor” (Polish: Pokot) is a film by Agnieszka Holland from the Main Competition at the 42nd Polish Film Festival. I would like to highly recommend this crime drama. The film had its premiere on 24th February this year.

Plot of the film

A retired engineer, Janina Duszejko lives alone in the Sudety Mountains. She turns witness to a mysterious death of several hunters. However, she is certain about the identity of the murderer. But unfortunately nobody believes her story. Also, police inefficiency makes her start her own investigation. The film is an adaptation of a book ‘Drive Your Plough Over the Bones of the Dead’ by a Polish writer Olga Tokarczuk.

Director and cast

Agnieszka Holland is one of the most influential directors in Poland.  She began her career as assistant to eminent directors Krzysztof Zanussi and Andrzej Wajda. She is best known for her fight for women’s rights as well as involvement in political issues.  Agnieszka Mandat plays the main role of  Janina Duszejko. The cast includes other Polish actors for example Wiktor Zborowski, Jakub Gierszal, Andrzej Grabowski and Katarzyna Herman.

Awards and nominations

At 67th Berlin International Film Festival in 2017 Spoor received the Alfred Bauer prize – Silver Bear Award for a feature film that opens the horizons of filmmaking. It was also selected as the Polish entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 90th Academy Awards.

This film is also a candidate for Golden Lions Award at 42nd Polish Film Festival. That’s why I think you should check it out!
