Lechia Gdansk returned to wins in Polish championship with a home victory over Slask Wroclaw by 3-1. Portuguese brothers Paixao were the stars in a game by scoring all goals from their team.
First half packed with action
After losing in the last minute to Cracovia in last round, Gdansk team entered the home game motivated. They soon started dominating and had a good chance to score in the 14th minute. A header by Marco Paixao missed the target after a center by Slawomir Peszko, who came as a replacement of Rafal Wolski. Five minutes later, defender Wawrzyniak put Lechia Gdansk in trouble by touching the ball with the hand in the box. However, Marcin Robak could not score from the 11-meter spot allowing keeper Kuciak to save the ball.
Lechia took some time to regain the control over the match, but eventually they were near the guests’ goal again. In the 35th minute Marco Paixao took advantage from a hole in Slask defense. Served by his brother Flavio, Marco shot toward the goal, but keeper Slowik made an excellent save with the hand.
The last six minutes of the first half were packed with action. First, it was Slask who caused chills in Lechia’s defense. Fortunately for Gdansk’s team, referee Szymon Marciniak cancelled the play after spotting an offside. In the following minute, Lechia got the advantage after Peszko-Marco Paixao combination. Polish forward served the older Paixao in a free kick and the Portuguese scored the 1-0. Slask wanted to answer this goal with stylish action. Chrapek and Robak, both with artistic touches in the ball, served Vacek on the 44th minute. However the Czech midfielder wasn’t able to score the equaliser.
Second half
Seven minutes into the second half, the referee used VAR after a handball in Slask’s box by Celeban. After seeing the video footage, the referee decided to give a penalty kick. Flavio Paixao didn’t miss and scored the 100th goal of Paixao’s brothers in Ekstraklasa.
Losing by 2-0, Slask was only able to be near the goal in the 71st minute when Riera shot to the bar after a center by Kosecki. This however was not enough to put the away team back into the game. Ten minutes from time, three Portuguese players built Lechia’s third goal and gave more confidence to Gdansk team. Romario Balde, who entered just two minutes earlier ended isolated Flavio Paixao after two Slask defenders couldn’t put away the ball. Flavio served his older brother Marco, who had no trouble scoring his second goal in this match.
Slask answered right away scoring their only goal. Madej, who came into Kosecki’s place some minutes before, scored after Joao Nunes couldn’t cut the ball.
