The history of the Tricity Derby

The first match between Lechia Gdansk and Arka Gdynia was played more than 50 years ago, at September 2nd 1964. That game was won by white and greens with a score 2:1. Since then both teams met 36 times. 12 games were won by Lechia, 12 by Arka Gdynia and 12 ended with a draw. That makes the competition tight and underlines that the upcoming match may decide about the dominance of one of the teams in Tricity.

Arka Gdynia

In 1929, 3 years after Gdynia obtained city rights, a football team named KS Gdynia was formed. The biggest success of the team was winning the Polish Cup in 1979. This was the first time any club from Pomerania region won the Polish Cup. This season Arka came back to Extra League after 5 years in Polish First League and winning the league in previous season. Before the Derby match Arka is at the 5th place in the league and for sure an appetite for more.

Lechia Gdansk

The club from Gdansk was formed in 1945. The team quickly advanced to the first league and in 1955 played in the final of the Polish Cup, where they lost with Legia Warszawa 0:5. Their biggest success came in 1983, when 4 years after Arka Gdynia, they won the Polish Cup. Their highest place in Polish leagues was 3rd, so it isn’t a surprise why the supporters are now so excited with Lechia’s leadership in Extra League. Having won 9 of 13 matches, the team from Gdansk seats comfortably at the leader’s place having 4 points of advantage.
