A sneak-peek into English football: The quarter-finals of Football League Cup

Football League Cup, currently known as a Carabao Cup is an annual knockout football competition in men’s domestic English football. In this season, there is the 58th edition of this Cup. The winners will play in the second qualifying round of the 2018/19 UEFA Europa League.
On Tuesday and Wednesday 19th & 20th December 2017, eight teams played their quarter-finals.

Leicester City v Manchester City

1 : 1 (3 : 4 on penalties)

Claudio Bravo was again Manchester City’s penalty shoot-out hero. He kept out Riyad Mahrez’s effort after Jamie Vardy had hit the post. As a result, the Citizens beat Leicester City 4-3 on penalties to progress to the Football League Cup semi-finals. Bravo saved two spot-kicks in the previous round against Wolverhampton Wanderers as well. 
It was the game of the former champions against the potential Premier League Champions of this season. Unfortunately for the fans both teams started the game with second squads.
Visitor’s winger Bernardo Silva scored the opener in the first half. It was his second goal of the season, which followed Ilkay Gundogan’s powerful run from the halfway line. The Foxes took the game into extra-time and then penalties after Jamie Vardy scored in the final minute of the added time.
After the game, Pep Guardiola and his players celebrated this important victory together with their fans.

The biggest surprise

The biggest surprise of the other quarter-finals was Wednesday’s Bristol City victory over Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United. The Robins won 2 : 1 after Korey Smith scored in the last minute of the game.

Other matches

In the other two games Chelsea London won against Bournemouth 2 : 1 and West Ham United lost the London derby against Arsenal 0 : 1.
