A sneak peek into English Football: The Premier League

In Sport

From time to time, thanks to our cooperation with B&O PRESS PHOTO, Tricity News makes a sneak-peek into one of the world’s best leagues. This time, our friends shared with us some pictures and news about this weekend’s round of the Premier League.

Leicester City 1:2 Newcastle United

Both teams have different aims this season. Leicester City chases top six to play Europa League next season. Rafael Benitez’s boys fight to avoid the relegation battle. However, last month Newcastle United were in better shape.

On Saturday at King Power Stadium the Foxes started on the front foot but they did not manage to score. After ten minutes Newcastle took the initiative. In the 18th minute of the game Jonjo Shelvey’s guided shot from outside the area opened the scoring after a deflection of Ben Chilwell. Leicester felt they should have had a penalty before the break but the referee decided differently.

Second half

Second half started similar as the first one. The Foxes attacked but nobody was able to put the ball in the back side of the net. In the 75th minute the Magpies scored again. Spaniard Perez doubled their lead with a delightful lob over Kasper Schmeichel. Jamie Vardy grabbed a late goal from close range but it was already too late even to draw the match. Newcastle United won 2 – 1 and Leicester’s dream of Europa League run little bit further. Now they are 6 points behind Burnley and 11 points below the 6th place which is occupied by Arsenal.

Rafael Benitez’s team’s victory, which followed back-to-back home wins against Southampton and Huddersfield, takes the Magpies up to the 10th in the Premier League, 10 points clear of the relegation zone.

Manchester Derby

The biggest surprise of the weekend came from Etihad Stadium where Manchester City who led 2 – 0 was finally beaten by local rivals Manchester United 2 – 3.
