From time to time, thanks to our cooperation with B&O PRESS PHOTO, Tricity News makes a sneak-peek into one of the World’s best leagues. This time, our friends shared with us some pictures and news about this weekend’s round of FA cup.
FA Cup
The FA Cup is the oldest knockout cup competition in the world. It dates back to the 1871 – 72 season. The competition is open to any eligible club down to Level 10 of the English Football League system. Winner qualifies for the Europa League group stage.
Notts County
Notts County (founded in Nottingham 28th of November 1862) is the world’s oldest football league club. They currently play in League 2.
The club has a few connections with Tricity in Poland. In 2015 they were managed by former Lechia Gdansk manager Ricardo Moniz. In 2010 Arka Gdynia played against them during a training camp in Austria. Yellow&Blues won that match 1:0. Between 2012 and 2014 their number one goalkeeper was born in Braniewo, former Poland U – 21 captain Bartosz Bialkowski.
Notts County 1 v 1 Swansea City
On 27th of January 2018 in the 4th round of FA cup Notts County played home game. Their opponents were Lukasz Fabianski’s Premier League team Swansea City. Unfortunately Lukasz was not in the squad for the game.
In the first half Notts County showed too much respect to the Welsh opposition. They were mostly on the back foot. Just after half an hour, Portuguese international Renato Sanches was forced off with an injury. Ki Sung-Yueng came in as a replacement.
In the 45th minute, Swansea’ s number 11 Luciano Narsingh scored. This happened after a clever lay-off by Ki.
Notts County’s response was an attack just after the restart. A levelling strike seemed inevitable. On the 62nd minute, it arrived via Elliott Hewitt’s cross. Swansea gave the opposition too much time and there was Stead to finish business. It was his sixth goal in six games. He scored in every round of this season’s FA Cup.
Notts County had enough chances to win the match but they missed all of them. Swansea City attacked as well but Magpies’ number one goalkeeper Adam Collin showed many brilliant saves.
The match finished 1 : 1 and the replay will be played shortly at the Liberty Stadium.
A big surprise in London
The giant killers were Wigan Athletic (League One). They won 2 : 0 against Premier League team West Ham United at London Stadium.
